Me and my Journey…
My passion for building things grew from time spent with family members whose example helped shape my appreciation for making things by hand. Those experiences led me to develop an appreciation for detailed work, thoughtful design, and quality craftsmanship.
My journey into furniture making began when I set out to build pieces for my own home. I found that much of the commercially available furniture lacked the quality, integrity, and soul I wanted in the things I lived with. After some initial success, I began to seek out opportunities to learn under other experienced furniture makers, whose attitudes and work exemplified the characteristics that I strived to integrate into my own. I’ve been fortunate enough to hone my skills at Marc Adam’s School of Woodworking in Franklin, Indiana and Center for Furniture Craftsmanship in Rockport, Maine.
After 20 years as a mechanical engineer, I now dedicate myself to furniture making, merging my technical background and my passion for design and craftsmanship. Today, I create custom furniture primarily using domestic hardwoods, blending contemporary design with historical influences, subtle curves, and considered details.
My construction methods have a foundation in traditional techniques: dovetails, mortise and tenons, etc. but also incorporate modern techniques where it makes sense. This is accomplished with a mix of power tools and hand tools, depending on the need. While much of my work is solid wood construction, incorporation of veneer can greatly open up the design space. There is so much to explore; I hope to be able to share my passion with you!
